An Introduction to Sexual Harassment and Policy – FREE RESOURCE

Live entertainment can be experimental, exploratory and bold; but our creative spaces must also be safe for all who use them. Arts institutions applicable must adopt a zero-tolerance approach for any form of harassment at work, including sexual harassment. This policy applies to employees, freelance staff, independent artists and all others that they work with. A policy covers sexual harassment [SH] which occurs at work and out of the workplace, such as on business trips or at work-related events or social functions. It covers SH by staff (which may include consultants, contractors/freelancers and agency workers) and also by third parties such as customers, suppliers or visitors.

Conversations surrounding the entertainment media’s treatment of young women are more prominent recently than ever before, following the recent documentary ‘Framing Britney Spears’, which explores her struggles with fame, legal conservatorship and bullying under the guise of journalism. Although the attention is finally on the press’ mistreatment and misogyny - which has taken the careers, spirits and even lives of far too many - the question still remains: why has it taken this much to confront the media, and why is it a phenomena rooted in sexism?
