Following the release of their sophomore EP ‘All Hail To Your Queen’ last year, Bristol-based atmospheric Alt-Pop quartet Ålesund return with their latest single, ‘Lightning’. Released on February 26th, the track combines Ålesund’s signature ethereal, yet up-tempo acoustics, and teases their upcoming EP, ‘A Thread In The Dark’, due to be released this Spring.
Composed of Alba Torriset’s vocals and keys, Lloyd Starr’s guitar and synth, Jake Bright’s bass, and Jai Widdowson-Jones’ drums, Ålesund has perfected their craft over the years to create cinematic, Nordic inspired soundscapes. And their most recent single is no exception. ‘Lightning’ is an up-beat, well-mixed, and full-sounding track, complete with powerful and emotive vocals. The track radiates an otherworldly, dream-like quality that makes it a perfect new addition to Ålesund’s swiftly growing discography.
Full of feminine power and majestic, all-encompassing sound, ‘Lightning’ is a must-listen for Kate Bush and Florence and the Machine fanatics. Lyrically speaking, the track is all about the part-excited, part-anxious feeling you get before making a big (and potentially risky) life decision, as well as the courage and spirit that is required to do so. Although this may be nerve-racking, the track remains optimistic and assures that it’ll all work out in the end, as front-woman, Alba states: “if you truly trust and believe in something, good things will come out of it.”
Since the past year has been pretty negative and stressful for us all, Alba set out to fill ‘A Thread In The Dark’ with hope and optimism in order to keep morale high. “With all the negativity in the world,” she said, “I wanted to create something uplifting and optimistic.” The four-track EP sees the band focus on and appreciate life’s bigger picture; taking a step back from the bustle of everyday life and reconnecting with the world around you. It is such an important and grounding message to convey during such an uncertain time.
Although the quartet was forced to cut their European tour short back in March 2020, they’ve still been able to put their creative talents to good use and no doubt hope to return to the live music scene as soon as they are able to do so. To accompany their new release, the band is set to share the music video for ‘Lightning’ to YouTube on March 5th and plan to release their third EP this Spring.
